AMG Lithium and EPC Group finalize detailed engineering for lithium hydroxide production in Bitterfeld

AMG Lithium has now finally entrusted EPC Group with the detail engineering for the battery grade lithium hydroxide upgrading plant in Bitterfeld. The contract was signed by the managing directors on March 29, 2022.

In addition to the usual financial, time and quality targets, the planning also focuses on specific environmental targets and occupational safety: extensive avoidance of wastewater, avoidance of product exposure and CO2 reduction through energy-efficient processes. Furthermore, both companies also intend to cooperate with each other on future projects in Bitterfeld and thus leverage synergies.

“With our decision in favor of the EPC Group, we deliberately selected a medium-sized family-owned company that has the necessary international project experience in chemical plant construction and is well networked in the region,” summarizes Stefan Scherer, Managing Director of AMG Lithium. “Also, in the close cooperation of the last weeks and months, we have noticed that we agree very well in the definition of goals and that the two teams are focused on their implementation,” both managing directors emphasize.

EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH is expanding its management team: From the 1st of July, 2021, Franz-Josef Willems and Karol Kerrane will be joining the management team of EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH. Together with Michael Streng, who is a member of the management and responsible for polymer technologies, Franz-Josef Willems and Karol Kerrane succeed the company’s previous managing directors Jens Henkel, Ulf Henkel, Nadine Henkel and Tim Henkel, who will continue to be a part of the company in the future as managing directors of EPC Holding GmbH and EPC Group Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH, which will mainly drive the expansion and development of new business areas.

Franz-Josef Willems has been working for EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH for 14 years, he is currently the  branch manager at the Arnstadt office. Karol Kerrane is the Sales Director and Head of Technology Licensing at EPC Group for 10 years. The management team is being expanded as part of  EPC Group’s expansion strategy with the aim of expanding and developing new business fields.

EPC extends technology portfolio by a novel manufacturing process for soil enhancers

Sustainable fertilizer for the world: The Dortmund-based company Novihum Technologies GmbH is committed to improving the soil. The highly innovative process patented by NOVIHUM produces a worldwide unique soil enhancing permanent humus granulate from lignite and other additives. This increases the agricultural yield enormously and is therefore a valuable and long-term solution for feeding the world population.

EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH already supported NOVIHUM® during the development phase by providing engineering services and turnkey manufacturing of the pilot plant. With the addition of the NOVIHUM®  technology to the product portfolio of EPC, this partnership is now being strategically expanded.

“Through the partnership with Novihum® we can offer our customers from all over the world an unique solution in the field of soil improvement technologies,” explains Jens Henkel, Managing Director of EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH. “With the granulate the ideal humus content and the optimal carbon / nitrogen ratio can be achieved for each soil type. Even light or leached and dry soils are thus provided with the optimal conditions for particularly high-yielding cultivation”.

The pilot plant of Novihum Technologies GmbH is located in Dortmund. Since 2016 this plant produces 1,000 tons of the humus granulate annually. It has since then been used in agriculture, which again showed that NOVIHUM significantly increases the fertility of the soil, lets it keep moisture much longer and ultimately increases the harvest yield enormously. Especially under stress conditions as in the last dry years the results are very convincing. The planning activities for the first large-scale plant with a capacity of up to 100,000 tons per year have already been completed. EPC Engineering & Technologies offers worldwide turnkey plant construction for this project.

EPC Engineering & Technologies takes over planning of the PHENOL-3 plant

Turn two into three: Leuna-Harze GmbH reacts to the increased market demand for phenolic resins and has a third production plant built to meet it. EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH is in charge of the complete engineering including procurement for this project.

The plant will be built on a newly developed site north of the existing Leuna-Harze plant complex at the Leuna chemical site. Construction and assembly work began in June 2020 and will be completed in June 2021.

The product portfolio and production capacity correspond to those of the predecessor plants in a process that has been partially modified in terms of energy and materials.

The building structure and the proven plant technology were largely adapted from the predecessor plants, whereby the instrumentation and control and process control technology was extensively upgraded. The auxiliary systems and the connection to the existing plant were completely redesigned.

EPC Engineering & Technologies signs cooperation agreement with Pontes Pabuli

Conserve natural resources and use them efficiently: EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH offers with its new cooperation partner Pontes Pabuli an innovative process for phosphorus recovery. This novel technology offers a sustainable and at the same time economic solution for the 2017 statutory fertilizer regulation. According to this regulation, the operators of sewage treatment plants (usually municipal companies) are obliged to recover phosphorus from sewage sludge and return it to the material cycle by 2032 at the latest.

Pontes Pabuli with its sustainable process engineering solution forms a bridge between the previously lost nutrients in organic residues and the specific nutrient requirements from agriculture. In this process, phosphate is extracted from incineration ash and recovered, from which high-quality fertilizer is produced. This standard fertilizer enriched with sewage sludge ash has a large sales market and generates calculable revenues. Furthermore, the Pontes Pabuli process convinces with low process costs through efficient energy use.

EPC Engineering & Technologies will be a speaker at this year’s Globuc Event – Go Circular. A digital event for the petrochemical industry, aiming to act as a roadmap towards the implementation of a circular economy for the petrochemical industries. The event will cover the entire circular plastics value chain, companies from brand owners, chemical companies, waste management and recycling, national and regional regulators, start-ups, banks, packaging and investment funds. Mr. Karol Kerrane, Business Development Director and Head of Technology Licensing at EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH will be one of the key speakers at this event. He is talking about  the CreaSolv® EPS Recycling Technology and how it is bridging the gap between mechanical & chemical recycling of Expanded Polystyrene.
As this topic is particularily interesting for the organizers of the event and the participants, the Globuc Team recorded a brief interview with Jörg Hamann, head of the EPC subsidiary in Alzenau and head of this technology, to show in advance. In the short interview Jörg Hamann is talking about the difference between mechanical and chemical recycling of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and explains why, while both have a reason to exist, a third method is still needed to close the loop.

EPC starts up two polycarbonate
plants in Asia this year

Despite COVID: Corona in defiance: EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH will commission no less than two plants for the production of phosgene-free polycarbonate this year. For this purpose, engineers and specialists have been sent to Zhoushan and Hainan, both islands in China, to ensure smooth commissioning on site.

“We worked with our customers to obtain special permits that allowed our employees to stay in the country longer than the usual 30 days,” explains Tim Henkel, managing director of EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH. “China itself has already been back to normal for several months, which means that our employees on site themselves experience hardly any restrictions.”

Both plants are equipped with EPC’s proprietary variPLANT® technology to produce 260,000 metric tons of phosgene-free polycarbonate. The plant on Zhoushan Island from customer Zhejiang Petroleum and Chemical (ZPC) was commissioned with the first two production lines in April.  In October, the plant on Hainan Island, which was contracted by Hainan Huasheng New Material Technology Co., Ltd. will follow.

EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH proudly attended the Grand Opening of Polystyrene Loop demonstration plant in Terneuzen, Netherlands yesterday (16th June 2021).

The EPS (expanded polystyrene) recycling plant is the first plant capable of removing HBCD flame retardants from EPS waste such as construction waste. The technology ‘closes the loop’ by enabling the recycled PS and the recovered HBCD to be returned into their respective product life cycles.

Mr. Michael Streng, Karol Kerrane and Joerg Hamann travelled from Germany to Terneuzen to join the team of EPC Engineers already on site preparing for the plant start-up.

The technology has been developed by Fraunhofer IVV in cooperation with CreaCycle GmbH and supported by EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH.

Mr Karol Kerrane commented ‘Not only is this Demo Plant used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the innovative technology, it is also a great demonstration of international collaboration and cooperation coming together to achieve Worlds’ Best Practice. Congratulations to everyone involved in this great achievement. EPC looks forward to the ongoing scale-up of this technology to a commercial capacity and thereby assisting investors in making significant contributions to the closing the loop and achieving a circular economy’.
